INFO FOR
FIREFIGHTERS

What gear do firefighters need for the climb?

INFORMATION
FOR
FIREFIGHTERS.

Our official partnership with the Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency (HFRE) is critical to our success and we want to thank them for their continued, vital support. Thank you as well to ALL fire stations who are supporting this event!

Firefighters know how important it is to take steps to safeguard lung health.  When fighting fire, they must take precautions to protect themselves from harmful exposure to pollutants.  Each fire they respond to exposes firefighters to a mix of toxic gases, chemicals and other substances that contribute to firefighters elevated risk of respiratory disease and cancer.

As our community heroes climb the 36-flight stairwell at Scotia Square, they will be wearing 75lbs+ of protective gear!

Come out and cheer on our community heroes!

EQUIPMENT NEEDED (check with your training or logistics department)

Please be prepared to race in full firefighter gear (each department is responsible for bringing their own gear):

  • Pants

  • Coat (with liners intact)

  • Helmet (hoods will not be worn)

  • Empty self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) will be worn and used throughout the entire Stairclimb. *Due to liability issues and safety, all cylinders should be EMPTY for transportation and for the climb.

Each participant in the Firefighter division must wear gear that meets current National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) structural firefighting standards. All firefighters are expected to bring their own gear, or arrange to get gear through their respective Departments.
